Today (28 September 2017) is National Poetry Day. Having spent the whole of September on different Hebridean islands, this wonderfully evocative poem by Gerry Loose (taken from the marvellous Scottish Poetry Library site) feels like the perfect contribution:
I have become slightly obsessed about taking photos of the different flora and fauna around us on Skye, Harris and South Uist. Most of the flowers are turning to seed heads, but still retain a wonderful dignity and sculptural beauty; a perfect reflection of the rugged yet fragile topography of the islands themselves. I also love the drifts of foliage, which mirror the waters all around us.
Here is a selection of images to complement the poem (click to enlarge):
The theme of this year’s National Poetry Day is ‘freedom’. There is no better place to feel free than on a small island. How lucky we have been to experience so extensively the breathing space, liberty and openness of these treasured parts of Scotland. 🙂
Your photos are beautiful illustrations for the poem. Your creativity has been set free by your island time. 🙂

The detail in the poem is wonderful, and so specific to the place (or so I imagine, since I haven’t been there . . . yet!)

So glad you like it, Kerry – hopefully it won’t be too long before you can see for yourself… 🙂

I can see why you are “slightly” obsessed. I have just been reading a new book, “The Hidden Life of Trees” by Peter Wohlleben. I will forever view trees, plants, flowers, forests, and meadows differently. There is so much life and freedom that can be found in the soil.
