Over the last few days, I have seen various different reports about how Scottish companies and communities are embracing the need to tackle plastic waste. There’s a long way to go with solving this global problem. But as I said in my last post, we’ve got to start somewhere. Here’s a great blog post explaining why plastic straw usage, for example, needs urgently to be drastically reduced.
Ferry Companies NorthLink and CalMac will be replacing various plastic packaging items in the coming months. The Scottish village of Ullapool will soon become a plastic-straw-free-zone.
Communities and business taking action like this are vital in the move to raise awareness about plastic usage. In these cases the moves have been inspired by the wonderful #NaeStrawAtAw campaign established by pupils at Glasgow’s Sunnyside Primary and Ullapool Primary schools.
It is the perfect embodiment of Gandhi’s ‘be the change you want to see in the world.’ And how apt to be talking about all of this today, of the anniversary of Robert Burns’ birth….
I went to a local coffee shop that was using Bucatini pasta instead of straws. I thought it was such a great idea, everyone should do it.

What a great idea! A bit like those spoons made out of chocolate for stirring drinks. Perfect 🙂

We need to rethink everything we do when it comes to using plastics. Plastic is ubiquitous and it is so easy to accept what is rather than consider what is possible!!

Absolutely right. It is only by stepping back and looking afresh at all the plastics in our lives that we can make changes – helped, of course, by businesses and governments.

Good to see such great support for “no more plastic straws”.

This is good to see! Our young people are our consciences sometimes.

I think young people are leading the way in several ways these days. Good for them, and for us too.
